How Long Does It Take to Process All Requirements for a Judge Wedding

Most couples who start researching a judge wedding assume the process takes a week or two. It does not. Between PSA document requests, the Local Civil Registrar application, the mandatory ten-day posting period, and court scheduling, the realistic minimum is four to six weeks. For some couples, it stretches to eight or ten.

The timeline is not complicated, but it has hard stops built into it by law. Knowing where those stops are lets you plan around them instead of being surprised by them.

The Four Stages That Drive the Timeline

The total processing time for a judge wedding breaks into four distinct stages. Each stage has its own timeline, and some run in parallel if you manage them well.

  • PSA document requests
  • Local Civil Registrar application and posting period
  • Marriage license release
  • Court scheduling and wedding date confirmation

Treating these as a sequence adds unnecessary weeks. Running them in parallel wherever possible cuts the total time significantly.

Stage One: PSA Documents

You need PSA-issued birth certificates and CENOMARs for both parties before you can file your marriage license application. These are your starting documents. Nothing moves without them.

PSA Birth Certificate

Online orders through PSAHelpline.ph or Serbilis.com take three to seven business days for Metro Manila delivery. Provincial delivery takes longer, typically seven to ten business days depending on the courier and your location. Walk-in requests at a PSA outlet are processed on the same day or within two to three business days depending on the branch's volume.

If your birth was not registered, has errors, or has a discrepancy in spelling, address this at your Local Civil Registrar first. Corrections go through a legal process that takes weeks to months depending on the type of error. Factor this in early.

CENOMAR

The Certificate of No Marriage follows the same delivery timeline as the birth certificate. Order both documents at the same time. There is no reason to request them separately.

If you were previously married, your CENOMAR will reflect that record. An annulled party needs a CENOMAR that shows the annulment. A widowed party needs the death certificate of the deceased spouse. Both situations require additional documents on top of the standard CENOMAR. Read requirements for annulled or widowed Filipinos getting remarried for the full breakdown.

Realistic Stage One Timeline: One to Two Weeks

Order PSA documents the day you decide to get married. Do not wait until you have confirmed your wedding date. The documents have a validity window, typically six months to one year from the date of issuance, so ordering early does not waste them as long as you move forward within a reasonable timeframe.

Stage Two: Local Civil Registrar Application

Once your PSA documents are in hand, you file your marriage license application at the Local Civil Registrar of the city or municipality where either party has resided for at least six months.

Your application package includes:

  • PSA birth certificates of both parties
  • CENOMARs of both parties
  • Valid government IDs
  • Accomplished application form from the LCR
  • Proof of residence
  • Pre-marriage counseling certificate
  • Family planning seminar certificate

The LCR reviews your documents on submission. If anything is missing or incorrect, they return the application. This is not a rejection. You correct the issue and resubmit. But each back-and-forth adds days.

The Pre-Marriage Counseling and Family Planning Seminars

Most LGUs require these certificates before they accept your application. Do not assume you can submit them after the fact. Check with your LCR whether they conduct these seminars in-house or whether you need to attend at a separate office such as the city social welfare office or the barangay hall.

Seminar schedules vary by LGU. Some hold sessions weekly. Others hold them twice a month. If you miss the next available schedule, you wait for the one after that. Find out the schedule before you need it.

The Ten-Day Posting Period

After the LCR accepts your complete application, they post a notice for ten days. This posting is a legal requirement under the Family Code. It gives anyone with a legal objection to the marriage the opportunity to file one. You cannot shorten this period. You cannot pay to expedite it. It runs its ten days regardless.

The clock starts on the day the LCR posts the notice, not the day you submit your application. If the LCR takes three days to review and accept your documents, the posting period starts on day three.

Realistic Stage Two Timeline: Two to Three Weeks

This includes document review, any seminar attendance, and the full ten-day posting period.

Stage Three: Marriage License Release

After the posting period ends without objection, the LCR releases your marriage license. In most LGUs, the license is ready within one to three business days after the posting period closes.

The marriage license is valid for 120 days from the date of issue. Use it within that window. If it expires before the wedding takes place, you apply for a new one and the posting period runs again.

Realistic Stage Three Timeline: One to Three Business Days After Posting Ends

This stage is short. The wait is the posting period in Stage Two, not the release itself.

Stage Four: Court Scheduling

This is the stage most couples forget to start early enough. Judges have court calendars. Civil wedding slots are limited. Popular judges in busy courts book out weeks in advance.

Contact the Office of the Clerk of Court at your target Regional Trial Court or Municipal Trial Court the moment you submit your LCR application. Do not wait for the marriage license to arrive. By the time the license is in your hands, you want a wedding date already penciled in.

When you contact the court, ask:

  • Which judge handles civil weddings
  • What dates are available
  • Whether the judge allows outside venues or conducts ceremonies in-chambers only
  • What documents the court requires you to submit before the wedding day

Some courts require you to submit a copy of your marriage license and other documents a few days before the ceremony. Confirm this requirement and meet the deadline.

Realistic Stage Four Timeline: One to Four Weeks Depending on Court Availability

In courts with high demand, particularly in Metro Manila and major cities, popular slots book out fast. Start this stage early.

Running the Stages in Parallel

The most efficient approach:

  • Order PSA documents on day one
  • Research your LCR's seminar schedule and attend the earliest available session
  • Submit your LCR application the moment PSA documents arrive
  • Contact the court the same week you submit your LCR application
  • Confirm your wedding date while the posting period runs

Couples who treat each stage as a sequence, waiting for one to finish before starting the next, add three to four unnecessary weeks to the total timeline.

Factors That Extend the Timeline

PSA record issues. Birth certificate errors, unregistered births, or discrepancies between documents push Stage One from one week to potentially several months depending on the correction required.

LCR document rejections. A missing seminar certificate, an expired PSA document, or a proof of residence that the LCR does not accept sends your application back and resets the review clock.

Court backlogs. Courts in densely populated cities handle high volumes. A judge with a full calendar in the weeks you need may push your date further out than expected.

Annulment or widowhood documents. These require additional PSA records and court documents that have their own processing timelines separate from the standard requirements.

One party based abroad. Coordinating documents across international time zones, dealing with embassy-issued certificates, and managing courier timelines adds complexity that a standard local timeline does not account for. Read civil wedding requirements when one party is abroad for what this situation involves.

A Realistic Total Timeline

StageMinimumMaximum
PSA documents1 week3 weeks
LCR application and posting2 weeks4 weeks
Marriage license release3 days1 week
Court scheduling1 week4 weeks
Total4 to 6 weeks8 to 12 weeks

These ranges assume no major complications. Couples with clean records, complete documents, and a proactive approach to parallel processing land in the four to six week range. Couples who encounter PSA issues, LCR rejections, or court backlogs land in the eight to twelve week range.

What to Do Right Now

If you have a target wedding date in mind, count back eight weeks from that date and start your PSA document requests on that day. This gives you buffer for complications without pushing your date.

If your target date is less than six weeks away, contact the LCR and the court immediately. Explain your timeline. Some courts can accommodate tighter windows depending on availability. Some cannot. You need that information now, not after the posting period ends.
